Winter weekend in Trentino: our tips for a perfect holiday

Thursday, 20 November 2025

Winter represents the favorite season for many of the people who visit this territory every year. In fact, there are so many things to do in winter in Trentino: outdoor sports, excursions, cultural visits, shopping at Christmas markets, or activities for the whole family.
Moreover, during the Christmas period, with the thousands of lights that come on in houses, shop windows, and along the streets, everything becomes even more magical and fairytale-like. Here, we want to tell you what you can do during a winter weekend in Trentino.

Visit fairytale castles

Trentino, like many regions in the alpine arc, is dotted with splendid castles. Many of these are open to the public and can be visited all year round, even in winter. For adults and children alike, it will be a joy to get lost among the rooms, imagining the history of those who lived there. Any examples?
Let's start with the most famous castle in Trentino, the Buonconsiglio in Trento. Ancient residence of the prince-bishops, its architecture tells a story that goes from the 13th to the 18th century.
The castle of the same name in Vigo di Ton, in Val di Non, belonged instead to the Thun family. Located on a hill, in a panoramic position overlooking the valley, it is surrounded by a complex system of fortifications with towers, walls, bastions, and a patrol path. Closer to Madonna di Campiglio is Castello di Stenico, in the Giudicarie area: a stern and imposing medieval fortress on the outside, inside it reveals itself as an elegant residence with sculptural decorations and precious frescoes.

What to eat in Trentino? All the taste of typical recipes

If you come to Trentino, whether it is your first time or you are a regular in these areas, you certainly cannot miss the local gastronomic specialties. Perhaps choosing them from our restaurant menu. There are truly many possibilities, but here we present just a few.
Let's start with canederli, perhaps the most typical dish of Trentino. Canederli are large dumplings made of stale bread flavored with speck, cheeses, vegetables, and aromatic herbs. They are served both in broth and dry. For the second course, you could then try carne salada, perhaps accompanied by tortel di patate. Carne salada is a beef charcuterie marinated in salt, pepper, and garlic, and then flavored in brine. Tortel di patate is instead a pancake made of grated potatoes and flour, usually accompanied by cold cuts, cheeses, sauerkraut, or beans.
To end your meal on a sweet note, we recommend the apple strudel, a great classic of Trentino cuisine.

Do snow sports

Many of you join us in winter to practice snow sports. Trentino, and in particular Madonna di Campiglio and Val Rendena, are a paradise for those who love this type of activity.
The possibilities are truly endless: Hotel Alpina is located very close to the ski slopes, including the legendary 3Tre, where the men's night slalom takes place every year for the Ski World Cup. On the other hand, the Ursus Snowpark, at an altitude of 2500 meters in the Grostè ski area and served by a cable car and chairlift, is dedicated to snowboard lovers. For those who love cross-country skiing, there are 22 km of slopes in Campo Carlo Magno: four different routes immersed in the immaculate nature of our Dolomites.

Some weekend ideas for non-skiers

And what if you prefer other activities instead of skiing or snowboarding? No problem, there are many other ways to experience the mountains in winter. Any ideas?
Let's start with snowshoes: around Madonna di Campiglio, it is possible to go on countless excursions with snowshoes. Here we have collected some proposals for snowshoe excursions.
Another way to become a child again on the snow is to ride a sled: with its 3 kilometers in length and 340 meters of elevation gain, the Malga Fevri slope guarantees fun for adults and children. If, on the other hand, you love animals, we recommend the Athabaska sleddog school: you can experience the thrill of a sled ride around Madonna di Campiglio pulled by a pack of sweet huskies.
We look forward to welcoming you here in Madonna di Campiglio to make you experience a memorable weekend, in all seasons!
