Wednesday, 11 February 2026

If the weather in the mountains isn't great or you simply feel like visiting a cultural city, we recommend a destination near us: Trento, a city rich in history, ancient and modern museums, venues, and places for shopping. In short, a destination suitable for satisfying the needs of the whole family, both in summer and winter.

Always a border city with the Central European world, Trento is famous for the Council, for the Castello del Buonconsiglio and recently also for the futuristic science museum, the Muse.

These attractions are all located in the historic center and the immediate surroundings. If you want to discover what to see in Trento, follow us on our tour through the city. This is a short tour, to be completed within a day.

What to see in Trento: let's start from Piazza Duomo, between the Council and art

Our walking itinerary begins here, in the city's parlor, home to the Duomo, the Museo Diocesano, the colorful frescoes of the Cazuffi-Rella houses, and in the center, the famous Fontana del Nettuno. Just stand next to this gushing masterpiece to enjoy all the elegance of the square: the marbles and the harmony of the buildings offer interesting views for photography lovers.

If you have a few minutes, we recommend entering the Duomo, dedicated to St. Vigilio, patron saint of the city, and losing yourself among Gothic arches and ornamental rose windows. Those who love sacred art can visit the Museo Diocesano in the nearby Palazzo Pretorio.

Leaving Piazza Duomo, we proceed through the streets of the center towards the Castello del Buonconsiglio.

At the Castello del Buonconsiglio

A visit to Trento certainly cannot skip the Castello del Buonconsiglio, residence of the prince-bishops of Trento until the end of the 18th century. The building is one of the most complex in Trentino: created on a medieval core, it has undergone expansions and changes over the centuries.

You pass from Castelvecchio, the oldest core, to the Renaissance-style Magno Palazzo, up to Torre Aquila, where the famous Ciclo dei Mesi is preserved, a series of medieval frescoes of rare beauty depicting the daily life of the Trentino people. This last wing is accessed with a separate ticket that we advise you to buy, it is well worth it.

A full dose of science for adults and children: let's visit the Muse!

After getting your fill of history, we retrace our steps and cross the center again to reach the now famous glass pyramid designed by Renzo Piano, home of the Muse.

The science museum of Trento will surely appeal to your children because inside it is very colorful, interactive, and fun. Suspended in the center of the museum, in the "Big Void," you will find the evolution of species, with actual dinosaur skeletons and many animals. To visit it all, from the basement to the 5th floor, takes about a couple of hours.

Let's say that with this short tour you will have visited the unmissable attractions in Trento, and you still have many others left to see... if you have some time left, you could take part in a tasting at Palazzo Roccabruna, visit the Tridentum Romana (underground city), or go up high, onto Doss Trento or on the Sardagna cable car to enjoy the view.

And if you visit Trento in winter, don't forget the Christmas markets!
