Excursion in Val di Fumo: everything you need to know

Thursday, 28 May 2026

Val di Fumo, with its pristine landscapes made of crystal clear waters, shady woods and lush meadows, is one of the favorite destinations among those spending their holidays in Madonna di Campiglio and in Val Rendena.
It is located a few dozen kilometers from here, at the western end of the Daone Valley.
Its territory is entirely included in the Parco Naturale Adamello Brenta and this makes it even more of a paradise on Earth. It is also easily accessible from Lombardy, from which it is divided by the ridge of Monte Fumo. On the other side, towards Trentino and the Valle del Chiese, there is instead the Carè Alto. Right there, at an altitude of 3,400 meters, the homonymous river, the Chiese, is born, the ninth longest among Italian rivers.

Val di Fumo: the trekking route

The itinerary we propose leads to the Rifugio Val di Fumo, the main refreshment point in the valley. The route to reach it on foot starts from Malga Bissina, at an altitude of 1,850 meters. You can get there by car, leaving it in the malga's parking lot.
The first stretch of the path is comfortable and flat and runs along the lake of Malga Bissina, an artificial basin built to exploit the hydroelectric potential of the area. After passing the lake, you will reach Malga Breguzzo, a now decommissioned structure.
Here the path becomes more demanding, narrow and at times steep. The route passes next to the stream, alternating flat moments and others with a slight uphill climb. Before arriving at the refuge, you will come across the malga Val di Fumo, where, if you wish, you can taste cheeses and typical products.

The Val di Fumo refuge

The Rifugio Val di Fumo is a large, welcoming structure, open from late spring until the end of summer. It offers various types of services: bar, restaurant and also overnight stay, with its 50 beds, 6 of which are in the winter bivouac.
If you go there in high season, keep in mind that the influx could be remarkable and that a long wait may be needed before sitting at the table. Alternatively, the refuge's bar offers sandwiches and excellent desserts. From the area in front of the refuge, you can enjoy an incredible view over the entire valley.

An ideal path for children

Given the distance between the starting and arrival points (about 6 kilometers) and the limited elevation gain (about 130 meters), the hike between Malga Bissina and the Rifugio Val di Fumo can also be tackled by children who are not too young. However, consider that in summer there could be exposed stretches and it could be very hot despite the refreshment of the watercourse.
If, on the other hand, your children need a stroller, you could fall back on the first part of the route, the one that reaches Malga Breguzzo (about half of the full itinerary). Up to that point, the road is in fact wide and mostly flat, manageable even with a good sports stroller.
Having clarified this, it is important to say that Val di Fumo, with its incredible nature and the many animals you will find grazing in the meadows, is a splendid place for adults, but even more so for children. They will certainly bring home indelible memories. Read here: other itineraries with children
