Sleeping in a mountain hut in Madonna di Campiglio: our advice

Friday, 19 September 2025

Sleeping in a mountain hut is one of those experiences that you absolutely must have at least once in your life. There are those who love the mountains and spend several nights every summer in these magnificent high-altitude outposts, essential stops for long traverses across the Alpine arc; and there are those who have only recently approached the world of hiking, or perhaps have always considered only day treks, and therefore have never had the opportunity to sleep in these arrival points.
In this second case, it is good to remedy this as soon as possible! Spending the night in a mountain hut in the Dolomiti means enjoying the majesty of mountain silence, tasting indescribable sunsets and dawns, and touching the sky with a finger! But how do you organize yourself to sleep in a refuge? And what are the main mountain huts near Madonna di Campiglio?

Our tips for sleeping in a mountain hut

Sleeping in a mountain hut, let's say it straight away, is not complicated at all: it is still about sleeping! But beware: it is an experience in search of simplicity, here you will not find all the comforts of a hotel. Often you will find yourself sleeping in a dormitory, sharing bathrooms, and rationing both electricity and hot water. Precisely for this reason, a night in a refuge is a unique experience that must be lived in the right way! Here is our advice:

Always book in advance: to allow the managers to organize themselves, but also because during peak periods finding a place can be difficult. And nobody wants to find themselves at high altitude at sunset without a place to sleep!

Prepare for the hike: even before sleeping in a mountain hut, you need to get there. It is important to study the route well and estimate the time required, to be sure of arriving at the landing point on time, without having to rush on rough trails!

Bring what you need: as mentioned, a refuge is not a hotel. Therefore, your backpack, in addition to the hiking essentials, must also contain a sleeping bag liner (as beds in mountain huts do not include linens), a mini bathroom kit with a towel, slippers, a trash bag, and preferably a small flashlight to reach the bathroom comfortably even at night (after dinner all the lights in the hut are turned off!)

The spirit of the refuge: finally, it is good to understand what the spirit of the mountain hut is, in order to best savor the experience and avoid causing disturbance: every place has its own rules, energy saving is a priority, along with the simplicity of the offer, as well as sharing and conviviality. And one last thing: after 10 pm absolute silence must fall in the hut!
