Stenico Castle
Today's suggestion takes you through castles, towards Stenico.
Castel Stenico is a well-preserved manor that dominates the outer Valli Giudicarie, perched on a rocky promontory.
We recommend it for several reasons: it is about 40 kilometers from Madonna di Campiglio, it is an excellent cultural alternative if you don't know what to do when it rains, and it is also interesting for nature lovers, thanks to the proximity of Bosco Arte Stenico, an unusual Land Art trail.
Centuries of history…
Since it is a castle, let's start by telling you a bit of its history.
Its origin dates back to the early medieval period, but from the 13th century it became the property of the Prince-Bishops, inhabited by their local administrators. The Prince-Bishops of Trento ruled the entire region, garrisoning the territory thanks to castles and watchtowers, of which Castello di Stenico is one of the best-known examples.
Over the centuries, Castello di Stenico has been expanded, modified, and embellished with new rooms.
The powerful Johannes Hinderbach and Bernardo Cles, in particular, took care of it by adding works, paintings, statues, and decorated rooms. For this reason, today it appears as an elegant complex, very rich from an artistic and architectural point of view.
The Sala di San Martino, for example, preserves an extraordinary pictorial cycle, a rare testimony of Romanesque painting in Trentino.
The rooms of the castle preserve private collections from the Castello del Buonconsiglio in Trento (discover what to see in Trento) as well as historical artifacts, ancient weapons, and furnishings of daily castle life, such as copper, iron, and wooden utensils.
Exhibitions and activities at Castel Stenico
The castle of Stenico often hosts itinerant exhibitions and opens up to concerts, conferences, tours, and activities for children and families. Take a look at the website of the Castello del Buonconsiglio, which hosts information on Stenico, to learn more about what you can find at the castle ahead of your visit.
The Bosco Arte Stenico
The BoscoArteStenico Land Art trail is directly connected to the Castle: it is an open-air exhibition made of installations in wood, leaves, branches, and natural elements. This excursion will amaze you because the exhibited works blend perfectly with the woods and its surroundings, taking on their appearance. To complete the natural immersion, don't forget the Rio Bianco Natural Area in the Adamello Brenta Natural Park.
As a testament to environmental awareness, Castello di Stenico has recently become the representative office of the Unesco Alpi Ledrensi and Judicaria Biosphere.
How to get to Castello di Stenico
From Madonna di Campiglio, go down towards Pinzolo, continue towards Tione and Ponte Arche, until you reach the village of Stenico. The route by car takes you through the Val Rendena and lasts about 1 hour.
Once you arrive in the village, a rather steep ramp leads you to the entrance of Castello di Stenico.
